Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’s a rip-off

So Bollywood has been borrowing ideas from Hollywood for years now. The latest to find their muse in the West is actor-producer Farhan Akhtar, co-producer Ritesh Sidhwani and director Zoya Akhtar. The poster of the trio’s soon-to-release movie, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD), appears to be a direct lift of that of the 2005 movie, Lords Of Dogtown.

Interestingly, a woman, Catherine Hardwicke, called the shots on the English film that is a fictionalised take on a group of young skateboarders raised on the mean streets of Dogtown in Santa Monica, California. The Z-Boys perfect their skateboarding skills in empty swimming pools of unsuspecting suburban homeowners, pioneering a thrilling new sport that eventually turns them into American legends.

Zoya’s film, we are told, is about friends — Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol and Farhan Akhtar — who go on a road trip through Spain. Let’s hope the coincidences between the two films end here. We tried contacting Ritesh Sidhwani, but he didn’t revert to our text messages.
