Couple arrives at secluded private island in the Seychelles
The fairy tale wedding of the decade behind them, Prince William and his bride Catherine have now officially embarked on their honeymoon.
While the rest of the world is still recovering from the royal “I dos,” the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are basking in the sun after landing in the Seychelles Tuesday morning, British newspapers said. “They slipped out of the country very quietly, they didn’t want a fuss,” a source told the Mirror.
The Seychelles is a group of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa.
The Seychelles have deep personal significance for the couple, as the setting for a make-or-break holiday in 2007 together after their temporary breakup. Then they spent a week on the tiny island of Desroches, 240 kilometres by helicopter from Mahé, the main island. Prince William is said to have told locals that it was the best holiday he had ever had.
This time, they are said to have chosen an exclusive private island, with only a handful of secluded $6,300-a-night villas. Described as a “Robinson Crusoe” island, each villa has its own personal chef and butler.
Its secluded white beaches offer opportunities for snorkelling and, as a haven for rare sea turtles, it is likely to appeal to the prince’s interest in conservation.
A spokesperson for the Seychelles ministry of tourism, said: “We are obviously delighted that Prince William and his new wife have decided to honeymoon in the Seychelles. We know they will want some peace and quiet and there couldn’t be a better place for them to find it.”
Once suggested by General Gordon, the Victorian colonial administrator, as the site of the Garden of Eden, the Seychelles has become one of the most sought-after honeymoon destinations in the world.
While the royal romantic getaway may be top secret, one post-wedding getaway has been confirmed: a trip to Canada.
The pair will be spending some time touring the country in late June before heading to California.
