Robbie Williams rejoined his band Take That as they started their United Kingdom and Ireland stadium tour in Sunderland on May 27th. Williams originally left the band in 1995 and the remaining band members separated in 1996.
The band performed for an excited, sold out crowd of 54,000 fans at The Stadium of Light as their first of 29 massive stadium gigs they have scheduled. It is estimated that 1.75 million fans will attend the concerts.
The performance was divided into three parts: one in which the band members performed without Williams, another section in which William’s solo career was celebrated and the last portion included the lead singer with the band.
The stage was elaborately decorated with dancers being drenched in a waterfall, masked dancers swinging burning lanterns and a 40-foot figure that made its way from crouching to standing throughout the show. This is thought to represent the steady progress of the band.
The band performed ‘Relight my Fire’ and ‘Never Forget’ while Williams’ solo performance included ‘Rock DJ’ and ‘Let Me Entertain You’.
Take That will continue the record-breaking tour with four more performances at The Stadium of Light followed by concerts in Glasgow, Dublin, Cardiff and Manchester. The tour will close with eight straight shows at Wembley Stadium in London in July.
