Oscar de la Renta’s unmatched legacy

Oscar de la Renta, the father to American fashion, famed for his glamourous red carpet gowns, died on October 20th at the age of 82. “I’m not interested in shock tactics. I just want to make beautiful clothes,” said the iconic designer back in 1963 and he sure lived by his word.

For more than six decades, his commitment to feminine elegance brought a magical touch to countless A-listers of stage and screen. The designer created beautifully elegant gowns, catering to all age groups and fit for occasions ranging from high society parties to the Oscars and Tonys.

Even in his final days, he was the go-to designer for celebrity brides and socialites who flocked to his rich, ever-feminine designs, which radiated wealth and style. The final iconic moment in his long and beautiful journey would be him dressing human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin for her wedding to actor George Clooney.

The fashion world has lost a truly remarkable talent. During Paris Fashion Week in September, the house of de la Renta announced that Peter Copping, designer of Nina Ricci, will take the design reins – Copping sure has some big shoes to fill.
