Kangana Ranaut turned out to be “accidental director” for her action movie!

When she signed Manikarnika: Queen of Jhansi, no one had a clue Kangana Ranaut would end up making her directorial debut with the project. The actress, who will be seen decked up as Rani Lakshmi Bai and swinging the sword against the British army on-screen, ended up directing a few portions of the movie. But how did her career take such a turn? Kangana spilled the beans on her journey from on-camera to behind-the-camera. The actress deemed herself as the “accidental director” while she explained her change of role in the movie.

“It was accidental,” she laughed. “Krish (the director) is actually a writer-director. He’s never really directed a film of another writer. So, when he was doing the script, even when he held the script in his hands for the first time, he was very sure he was not going to make (the movie) as it is. It (Manikarnika) needs to evolve,” she explained.

The actress went on to share that when the movie went on floors, the team shot action sequences for 70 to 80 days. “He really got interested in the mutiny part of it,” she said. She added that the producers were informed about the script developments. There were discussions about the changes and the movie reached its first edit. When the first edit was shown to the producers, they couldn’t associate the movie with Rani Lakshmi Bai’s story. “When we saw the first edit, Krish was very happy with it. But the studio felt that this can be called 1857 Mutiny but it cannot be called Manikarnika,” she shared.

“But Krish was sure that this was the movie he wanted to make but they (the studio) decided to go to the earlier script. And they were very sure that it has to be one woman’s journey, not the journey of independence,” she added.
