We all know how PFDC fashion week 2013 has been a huge success thanks to all the amazing and talented designers who showcased their collections on the ramp with beautiful models, in all the designers there was Sania Maskatiya whose collection came out with a fresh and beautiful idea of fashion. Sania Maskatiya is a graduate of the prestigious Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture in Karachi, Pakistan with a coveted degree in textile design, Sania Maskatiya has been designing since 2007, only a year after graduating, under the label ‘Chamak’. In 2010, in an exciting bid to expand into broader fashion endeavors, Sania launched her own label, the now eponymous ‘Sania Maskatiya’. Sania’s signature aesthetic has come to be regarded as a balance between elegance, comfort and practicality. We interviewed Sania to see her point of view of fashion in Pakistan.

1) Such platforms like PFDC and BCW are taking their toll, do you think fashion shows could really help Pakistan be a fashion inspiration for other countries?

Ans: It’s important to promote all forms of art in Pakistan. Fashion has come a long way in Pakistan and with our country being one of the leading producers of good quality cotton in the world, our fashion industry can play a vital role in promoting our textiles and creating value added products. With regards to the fashion industry making a difference to the economy, it does, as it creates positive competition within our own industry and promote our country’s aesthetics and culture. I believe our country has immense potential and we can rise as a major fashion force.

2) PFDC showcased 32 designers this year 2013, according to you which designer did justice to the show?

Ans: I think all the designers showcased interesting collections and have set the bar really high. It is extremely difficult to choose any one name in particular as each collection had a flavor of it’s own.

3) Tell us about your collection. What inspired you?

Ans: Our collection for PSFW celebrated the opening of our new store in Lahore.  The collection was an amalgamation of bold and vibrant along with the pastel hues that are representative of the magical city of Lahore. ‘Ahgaaz Resort 2013 – a new beginning’ was inspired by the craft and motifs of 19th century Persian, Middle Eastern, Hispanic and Italian Renaissance ceramics and tiles. Blending powerful images of dragons, serpents and birds with bold geometrics and florals into the warmth of rich hues and calm pastels, the collection showcased a garden of dreams and perilous new beginnings. Using a variety of fabrics such as raw silks, crepes, chiffons and shamoses, embroidered and digitally printed fabrics and screen prints with contemporary structured silhouettes, the collection was an interesting mix of prints, textures and fabrics.

4) What is your biggest fashion achievement so far?

Ans: Pakistani fashion industry is very competitive and being able to sustain our business and providing customers quality products, I feel, is a major achievement.

5) Since you’ve started your career in the fashion industry is it now different from that time? And how?

Ans: Well I didn’t expect it to be so fast paced. When I started, I never expected that setting up the organisation would be such a Hereculean task. However with the support of my brother and business partner,Umair Tabani and the entire team ,I feel we are well on our way. The stakes in the industry are high and there is a constant need to innovate, which I feel is exciting yet very challenging. Also, now with the access to media, people have become fashion savvy which is a welcome change in the society.

6) Tell us about your favorite outfit that you showcased at PFDC?

Ans: It’s difficult to highlight one outfit as we worked hard on the entire collection.

7) What goes through your mind when you’re about to show your collection?

Ans: I like to be organised in order to have a hassle free show – so there are always checks in place to ensure that everything goes smoothly resulting in minimal stress. The team is always on the same page thus the stress is converted to excitement. We try and work hard, caring less about how our collection will be recieved as I feel hardwork never goes to waste.

8) What are your thoughts about PFDC & Client Response you get from PFDC?

Ans: It’s always fantastic to be active on various fashion platforms – it has helped us garner visibility for our brand and to develop and showcase a signature style. These platforms play a key role in developing buyer interest.

9) What’s your specialty in designing?

Ans: We believe in creating versatile clothes that will suit the needs and demands of a wide range of audiences. My design house is known for combining traditional methods of design with contemporary silhouettes. For us, wearability and practicality are the most important things even when we are creating pieces for runway shows. That’s the reason why whatever we show on the runway is available in the store as well.

10) Any message for the young and new talent of Pakistan?

Ans: “If you put your head down and work hard, you will get noticed. It is important to build your brand and to showcase at various fashion platforms.”
