Heropanti

Movie: Heropanti
Music Directors: Sajid-Wajid, Manj Musik, Mustafa Zahid & Bilal Saad
Rating: 3

Bollywood: A multi-composer soundtrack, Heropanti has five tracks and one remix (of Tabah by DJ Angel) on the CD. The first three tracks have been composed by Sajid-Wajid with lyrics by Kausar Munir. Rabba (Mohit Chauhan) is largely forgettable despite Mohit’s voice on the track. Raat Bhar (Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal) may just as well be a reworked Mukhtasar in spirit, but it helps that the track is a far more polished, contemporary take.

It’s a romantic club track that has the potential to grow on you. Tabah (Mohit Chauhan) has electric guitars for a rock-like feel that plays a little too safe to be likeable for more than one listen. The Pappi Song (Manj ft Raftaar) is composed by Manjeet Singh Ral (who now goes by the moniker Manj Musik) is catchy yet quite annoying. Raftaar repeats “This is the Pappi Song” at least six times (for effect?), followed by a sloppy kissing sound, before Manj comes on. Only for those who love Punjabi rap and repetition. Tere Binaa is a Mustafa Zahid-Bilal Saad composition, sung by Zahid (of Pakistani band Roxen).

It’s a track not unlike most Pakistani rock fare. Whistle Baja Ke, sung by Manj and Nindy Kaur featuring Raftaar, is the only track from this film that features on our Bollywood Top 20 chart. It’s also the only one that’s not available on the CD put out by T-Series. Saregama, which holds the rights to a flute riff, originally created by Lakmikant-Pyarelal, has made the song available only for digital platforms. By far, the catchiest track of this film, Whistle Baja Ke marries nostalgia with Punjabi pop tropes quite effortlessly. A decent effort overall, only a couple of tracks really catch your ear.
