At the PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week, designer Faiza Samee will be showcasing her Spring/Summer 2013 collection. Inspired from her voyage through the Central Asian landscapes and the old world romance of Czarist Russia, the collection’s prints are a translation of fusion between the ethnic Central Asian weaves and vintage Russian Chintz. The designer has used light and luxurious fabrics coupled with a variety of textures and weaves in fresh spring colors. The collection includes short to mid-length tunics, some cut on the bias along with loose comfortable pants all handmade [ the label’s signature] to ensure luxury and quality. The designer’s collection is modern, youthful and possesses a lean silhouette, allowing today’s woman to build her own look by combining a series of separate pieces.
Starting in 1981, with the few remaining aged embroiderers and block printers who had learnt their skills as young apprentices in the last vestiges of the Indian courtly tradition, Faiza Samee attempted to curate heirlooms- only to discover, much to her dismay, that many of the stitches, methods and even raw materials had already been lost. And so began the journey that has made us one of the foremost centers of expertise for intricate hand embroidery and block printing anywhere in the world. Digging out these ancient heritage crafts has taken her to the dustiest, most remote corners of Pakistan to find artisans and craftsmen. After extensive research and study of embroidered textiles of the sub-continent she founded a program to train a new generation of craftsmen and block printers and reintroduced hand embroidered fabric to Pakistani society. Creating contemporary ensembles steeped in this cultural tradition has been a driving passion for Faiza Samee since over the past three decades. In 1997 she was commissioned by the Victoria Albert Museum to create two costumes for the colors of the Indus. She also shared 20 ensembles from her personal antique textile collection for display at the museum. Her ambition, then, as now is to systematically reintroduce these skills in our workshops and disseminate them to a newer generation; simultaneously developing the aesthetic knowledge through extensive research, to intertwine them into complete, relevant and contemporary pieces. The revival of ancient embroideries has always remained the focus of Faiza’s energies and it has been a great achievement of hers to proudly bring forth the ancient embroidery techniques in modern times.
