Chennai Express break records: joins 100 crore club in opening week!

Rohit Shetty’s ‘Chennai Express’ received an overwhelming response at the box-office. In just three days of the film release, it has joined the 100 crore club and made Rs 100.42 crores net totaling both Indian and domestic collection.

Deepika and Shahrukh Khan starrer, ‘Chennai Express’ set the box-office on fire. The movie made 33.12 crores on day one breaking ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ first day collection. On the second day, the collection showed little low with only 28.05 crores nett. But Sunday being a holiday, the rush for the film again heighten taking its domestic collection total to Rs 67.92 crores nett.  On the opening day, there was 80-90% occupancy.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh has tweeted about the film’s business, “#ChennaiExpress collects Rs 28.05 crore net on Saturday. This Express is Flying High!”

He further tweets, “#ChennaiExpress is on a record-smashing spree. Thu previews 6.75 cr, Fri 33.12 cr, Sat 28.05 crore. Total: 67.92 cr nett. MONSTROUS Weekend!”

Adarsh has also given the film’s business break ups, “#ChennaiExpress is a MASSIVE opener in Overseas too. Thu previews $1.29 million, Fri $2.3 million. Total: Rs 21.4 crore till Friday. SUPERB!”

Adarsh gives a glimpse of the market scenario as well, “#ChennaiExpress is a hurricane at the BO. Sets 3 records in 3 days: 1) Highest paid previews, 2) Highest Day 1 and 3) Highest Day 2.”

Thursday saw paid preview shows of this movie. Paid previews are limited screenings of big ticket movies. They are usually carried a day before the official release of the movie. At the end of the paid previews, the movie collected Rs. 6.7 crores in the domestic market, which is a very good sum. ‘3 Idiots’ went for paid preview shows and had collected 2.75 crores.

The film is released in 3700 screens in India and about 750 screens abroad. Outside India, the movie is released mainly in UK (175 screens), North America (195 screens), West Asia/North Africa (55 screens), Australia (30 screens), Germany, Switzerland, Morocco, Austria, Peru, Israel and France. In international markets, the movie is available in different languages subtitles.
