The gorgeous Sridevi turns 50 today! Let’s have a recap of glorious years she spend in Cinema

  1. Sridevi was born Shree Amma Yanger on August 13, 1963 in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu. Her mother was from Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.
  2. Her tryst with cinema began early. At four years old Sridevi debuted as a child artist in devotional ‘Thunaivan’ (Tamil). She played the cutest little Lord Murugan we have ever seen.
  3. She was soon signed on to MG Ramachandran ‘Nam Naadu’ (1969). And a host of other films followed speedily, making Sridevi an established actress even before she hit adulthood.
  4. Appearing only in South Indian cinema initially, Sridevi conquered the Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada film space rather quickly.
  5. But that too was short-lived. She soon ventured into Bollywood with 1975’s ‘Julie’ starring fellow Southie Laxmi. Bollywood was just as excited to see her as she was them.
  6. That being the case, she didn’t begin a full-fledged Hindi film career immediately. It wasn’t until 1983’s ‘Himmatwala’ opposite Jeetendra that Sridevi gained widespread popularity.
  7. Raised to respect family above anything else, it is no wonder that Sridevi always remained grounded through her early days in the industry. Her family provided that support-blanket that is imminent during those adolescent years, which was also responsible for Sri keeping her feet firmly on the ground.
  8. Thought considered a romantic heroine through and through, Sridevi didn’t fully understand what she was doing or the emotion behind a romantic scene. Instead she would break into peals of laughter every time she was asked to act out a love scene.
  9. Still too young to comprehend the emotion, she was asked to look sad and desolate -Alas, the quivering lip was born.
  10. Towering at five foot seven inches, besotting with her typical South Indian features, her transition to glam queen was quick and precise. She was plastered across magazine covers and feature spreads donning many a glitzy avatars.
  11. Not all glam and show, Sridevi was also gathering critical acclaim for her performances along the way.
  12. Her most notable early roles include Seema/ Miss Hawa Hawaii in ‘Mr. India’ (1987), title role in ‘Chandni’ (1989), Viji/Nehalata in ‘Moondram Pirai’/’Sadma’ (1983), Rajini in ‘Nagina’ (1986), Anju/Manju in ‘ChaalBaaz’ (1989), Pallavi/Pooja ‘Lamhe’ (1991), and Kaajal in ‘Judaai’ (1997).
  13. Sridevi has been paired opposite some of the biggest names in Indian filmdom across at least three different generations of actors to rightfully own the title of queen bee, if there ever was one. Here she is with NTR in the Telugu film ‘Vetagadu’(1979). She was 16 years old in when she shot this film!
  14. Sridevi played an otherworldly princess opposite Chiranjeevi in Telugu film ‘Jagadeka Veerudu Atiloka Sundari’ (1990).
  15. Sridevi played a mentally challenged woman in a moving love story opposite Kamal Haasan in the Tamil film ‘Moondram Pirai’ (1982).
  16. Sridevi plays an industrialist’s daughter opposite Rajnikanth in ‘Pokkiri Raja’ (1982).
  17. Ironically named Badshah Khan in the film, Amitabh Bachchan’s love interest is played by Sridevi in the film ‘Khuda Gawah’.
  18. Sridevi’s pairing with Jeetendra proved to be one of the many fruitful onscreen couples she was part of for years to come. The have together acted in hit films including ‘Himmatwala’, ‘Thofa’ and ‘Mawali’.
  19. Sridevi plays a vengeful wife seeking revenge from her husband’s murderers in ‘Army’ (1996). Shah Rukh Khan plays her husband in the film.
  20. Who can forget Sridevi and Anil Kapoor in ‘Mr.India’? Their onscreen chemistry was palpable and apparent. There were also rumours floating around for a bit about their possible off-screen romance. Whether there is any truth to that story, we will never know.
  21. Here is what we do know. Sridevi married Boney Kapoor, Anil Kapoor’s brother, in 1996. Their marriage came as a shock to the industry as Boney was married at the time. Nevertheless, the two are still happily married and share a pair of daughters together. The pretty girls, Jhanvi and Kushi are turning into fashionista’s right before our eyes. Can’t blame them when their mum is so well turned out at all time!
  22. In fact, Sridevi’s older daughter Jhanvi is often seen accompanying her mum to most fashion shows and the like.
  23. Sridevi willfully surrendered her acting hat in 1997 after her marriage to Boney Kapoor. Her last film was ‘Judwai’.
  24. She was seen on and off at social events alongside her family for many years. But the acting bug found its way back to her and in early 2012, Gauri Shinde’s ‘English Vinglish’ beckoned. Her ‘comeback’ film took viewers by storm, and Sridevi’s transition from films to family and back to films was complete.
  25. The diva is here to stay: Sridevi recently featured on Vogue’s cover appearing every bit the timeless beauty that she is. Her hold on her fans is gripping and long lasting. There is apparently talk of a ‘Mr. India 2’ in the works. But more on that later.

Ageless it seems, nevertheless, here is wishing the beautiful star a very happy birthday!
