Bips name is not given to me cuz of my relationship

For some time now, Bipasha Basu has been following a principle of working in only three films a year. The idea, she says, is not to do everything that comes her way.

After years of working non-stop and abusing her system with a lack of discipline, she’s now only doing what she really wants to do. And this year, that will be the Rohan Sippy-directed Dum Maro Dum (DMD), Abbas-Mastan’s Players and her Hollywood debut, the Rolland Joffe-directed Singularity.

Such a schedule not only allows Bipasha to give her best to each project, including promoting them all, but also to devote time to her other passions. “Before coming here, I was in Hyderabad to promote DMD and by the time we wound up there, I missed my flight here,” says Bips.

In the city on non-filmi work, Bipasha took time out to tell TOI about everything that’s keeping her busy at the moment. “My next release is DMD, in which I play a lively, colourful, happy-go-lucky girl called Zoey, who is the representation of Goa as we see it. There will be circumstances that change her. All the characters in this film have a dark side to them. But there’s a reason why each of them has done something wrong and we see how they all turn around eventually,” explains Bipasha. DMD also stars Rana Daggubati, Abhishek Bachchan and Prateik in the lead.

Her next project — Players, which is the Hindi version of The Italian Job — also sees her co-star with Abhishek. “Players is special to me for two reasons. For starters, this is my fourth film with Abbas-Mastan. They got me into films. I know that the way they project me in their films will be great. And then, of course, there’s Abhishek. I’m happy to be working with him. We were, after all, supposed to debut together with Aakhri Mughal. We even faced the camera together, but the film never took off,” she adds.

Then there’s the period drama Singularity, Bipasha’s Hollywood debut, which pairs her with Josh Hartnett, whom she admits to having had a crush on. “It was a little strange at first when you meet someone you’ve had a crush on. But I’ve now done a 40-day schedule with him and have loved the experience. In fact, the entire cast and crew of the film is in India next week for the next schedule in Madhya Pradesh,” she adds. Now that she’s doing a Hollywood project, would she want to do more? “It’s funny that when you do one film, everyone’s hellbent on sending you away. I’m not going anywhere. I am a Hindi film actress first. Such work is making the world more aware of actors and makes it easier to reach out to global films now. But I wouldn’t seek work there. If something comes, I’m open to an audition,” says Bipasha.

But despite so much going on in her life, the media and public focus right now is on her personal life. Rumours suggest she’s split from long-time boyfriend John Abraham and is seeing her DMD co-star Rana Daggubati now. She doesn’t confirm either. “It’s very irritating when people talk only about my relationships. My relationships didn’t make me. I am who I am today because of my hard work and not because of who I’ve been seeing. Relationships are a priority for me, but that’s for me to know. And no matter what I say, a newer version of the story will keep appearing. I realise that it’s better to clam up,” she signs off.
