The Pakistan Achievement Awards, UK & Europe, 2014 was held at the exclusive London Marriott Hotel in Grosvenor Square, for a lavish evening of dancing, singing, fashion and of course awards. It was an evening dedicated to recognising the meritorious achievements of Pakistanis in the UK and Europe and in its sixth year it is evident that the Pakistan Achievement Awards is a wonderful celebration of the successes, achievements and contributions British and European Pakistani Communities continue to make.
The evening was hosted by Durdana Ansari and Yasir Akhtar. Durdana Ansari spent twenty-two years as a producer for the BBC’s World Service, but in 2006 she pioneered the Ethnic Minority Foundation’s (EMF) Muslim Women’s Project which sought to teach English and IT skills. She was honoured with an OBE for her support and contribution for educating British Muslim Women. Yasir Akhtar is described as ‘a legend in the Pakistan Media Industry’ running his own film and television production company called “Pegasus Productions” as well as directing and producing the very first pop show chart in Pakistan called ‘Music Channel Charts’. Warm and charming, the hosts kept the guests engaged and entertained.
The evening featured a glamorous fashion show with some of the leading designers showcasing their dazzling work. Garments by Zaf Shabir and Nadya Mistry were highlights of the fashion show. Zaf Shabir has established himself in Asian and mainstream fashion industries, with his diverse, versatile and distinctive image he is a fierce Fashionista. Nadya Mistry is noted as one of Pakistan’s most innovative designers and with her bold colours and coveted designs her couture garments stood out in the show. The guests were also treated to a performance from dance sensation Karan Pangali. An outstanding choreographer and performer, his unique approach to Indian classical dance with fusions from the West is intriguing and very entertaining.
The focus of the evening was of course to present awards for individual’s contributions and accomplishments. Zaf Shabir, award winning supermodel and creative director received the ‘Art, Culture and Fashion Award 2014’. The ‘Young Person of the Year 2014’ was awarded to Rabbiya Naveed. Achieving an exceptional fifteen A*s and five As in her GCSEs, achieving world distinction in four subjects. Her international MENSA IQ test qualified her as a MENSAN with an IQ higher than 99% of the test participants. Following her GCSE and A Level results she received the 800th Anniversary Scholarship by the Cambridge Overseas and Commonwealth Trust enabling her to study Engineering at the University of Cambridge. The ‘Humanitarian Effort Award 2014’ went to Todd Shea, Executive Director or Comprehensive Disaster Response Services (CDRS), a Pakistan-registered charity operating healthcare and relief projects. He is the only American not of Pakistani descent to be nominated for the Pakistan Media’s ‘Azme Ali Shan Award’ which honours Pakistanis for distinguished services to Humanity. After giving a passionate speech about the charity ‘Penny Appeal’ Farah Ahmed received the ‘Media Person of the Year 2014’ award, as a highly recognised presenter with Sunrise Radio, the UK’s biggest Asian Radio Station, she has interviewed numerous celebrities and has passionately supported several charities.
The evening was a huge success, widely entertaining and engaging, it was a fantastic way to honour and appreciate the successes, achievements and contributions British and European Pakistani Communities continue to make.
